Angelina Jolie, Her Daughters and Maleficent’s International Success

Before anything else, we would just like to raise our champagne glasses and give Angelina Jolie a standing ovation for doing a tremendous job in the movie! It is the biggest box-office debut of the actress as Maleficent earned a whopping $70 million dollars in Canada and the United States. Internationally, excluding the mentioned countries, the movie has earned over an estimated amount of $100 million dollars in ticket sales. Hands down to everybody who all together turned the movie Maleficent into a phenomenon!

Maleficent is a fictional Disney character inspired by Walt Disney’s 1959 version of Sleeping Beauty. As the antagonist of the movie, Maleficent deliberately cursed Princess Aurora to "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die"on her sixteenth birthday after not being invited to the mentioned Princess’ royal christening. Because of so, Maleficent then has then proclaimed herself as the Mistress of All Evil. She is Disney’s version of the wicked fairy godmother from the original French fairy tale.

The Maleficent movie began filming on June 2012 and was initially released in France last Wednesday, May 28, 2014. The movie hit the cinemas in the United States of America in Disney Digital 3D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D two days later. The film It was directed by Robert Stromberg with an effective cast consisting of Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Brenton Thwaites, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, Lesley Manville and Kenneth Cranham.

The creation of the movie was considered risky by many because of how it may affect family audiences as it is a movie that retells the famous fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s perspective. It is said that the casting of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is one of the more rational reasons behind the movie’s great success. What then would the film industry be without a megastar like Angelina Jolie?

Aside from the Oscar-award winning actress’ casting as lead role, Vivienne Jolie-Pitt also played a role in the film as the young Princess Aurora. Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, Vivienne’s older sister was also offered to do an appearance in the same movie but politely declined. Angelina Jolie knew that Shiloh would turn down the offer and said, "We mentioned the idea of playing a princess and she obviously thought it was very funny. She's not that kind of girl." And as for Vivienne’s performance in the movie, Angelina Jolie is very proud of her daughter who she calls her shadow.

During the Hollywood premiere of Maleficent, the entire Jolie-Pitt clan was present. Angelina Jolie was elated when she said, "It's the first time all six of them are with me at one of these things, so they all got dressed up. It's very sweet.”

Maleficent has made so much during its opening that last weekend’s top film, X-Men: The Days of Future Past has been booted out of its thrown and into the second spot next to the Disney film.
